VILLAS OF WEDGEWOOD TOWNHOUSE ASSOCIATION

Wedgewood The concept of a community, including single-family homes and golf villas, was first proposed in the 1970’s. The property was considered ideal for residential living by developers. The problem that seemed to discourage development was failure to protect the wetlands in the plans. Attorney Bill Franz, representing ownership, had contact from many homebuilders interested in development and home sites, basically large houses on small lots. None of them considered including open land to provide a park-like environment. A property design was provided by Barrington, Illinois architect John Welker, also involved was Don Goodwin, according to Franz. Calaco Building Development Corporation was selected by Franz. Calaco owner, Nunzio Casalino was the first contractor to visualize the concept of a parkland setting. He designed the lakes and canals that provided protection for the wetlands. The proposed design was approved and monitored by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Conservation. Several homes were constructed in 1991. The first golf villa was occupied in December 1991. Bill Franz knew that Nunzio Casalino’s company was perfect for the project. He shared Franz’s vision of enhancement of the natural beauty of the area. In an interview Casalino said, “think how beautiful this area was 300 years ago. Prairie plants and trees were everywhere. We plan to maintain that environment!” Presently a majority of the single-family homes and all golf villas have been completed. From the beginning of Wedgewood, marketing promotion stressed the Community Covenants including conserving the natural environment, preserving architectural design and maintaining the landscape for all homes, villas, common areas, lakes and wooded reserves. Bob Blazier Bob and his wife, Rosemary, bought the first villa in Wedgewood in December of 1991. They have a son John and daughter-in-law, Amy. An icon in the community, some of Bob's accomplishments include: Superintendent of School District 47 from 1972 to 1985; Vice President of Northern Illinois Medical Center (now known as Centegra) in McHenry, IL from 1985 to 1990; President of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce from 1990 to 2007 and business communications officer at Home State Bank 2007 to present. Thank you Bob for providing this history of Wedgewood.
